Raising Rabbits on Pasture
Raising rabbits on pasture allows the animals to exercise, engage more easily in natural behavior, and improve their overall quality of life, while giving the farmer a way to move or manage rabbit housing easily. Rabbits raised on pasture produce more meat and meat of nicer quality, with more omega-3 fatty acids in the limited amount of fat contained in the carcass.
Raising Rabbits Organically at Rabbit Hill Farm
For the urban gardener or homesteader, domestic rabbits can be valuable livestock. Rabbit meat is an excellent source of protein; the pelts can be used in numerous applications including hats, lap robes, cushion covers, vests and coats; and rabbit manure is an excellent fertility source. For several years I raised rabbits within the city limits of Bangor. When my husband and I moved to Stonington, the rabbitry became an important component of our organic farm plan.
Coyote Creek Farm
At Coyote Creek Farm, we are dedicated to sustainable, organic, and local farming and ranching practices, coupled with the humane treatment of all animals. Our vision is clear: revitalize rural middle-class family farms by teaching families efficient and effective farming practices.
Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance
Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance (FARFA) is a national organization that supports independent family farmers and protects a healthy and productive food supply for American consumers. FARFA promotes common sense policies for local, diversified agricultural systems.
FARFA is an advocate for independent farmers, ranchers, livestock owners, and homesteaders, as well as the consumers who support family farmers. By protecting independent producers, we protect the safety, quality, and availability of our food.
Whats On My Food
At Pesticide Action Network (PAN) we know one thing: Pesticides are the linchpin of industrialized agriculture.
Their mass introduction into farming 70 years ago, along with petrochemically-derived fertilizers, set U.S. farming down a costly and unsustainable path. Along the way, community-scale farming was nearly destroyed, generations have suffered ill health ranging from cancer to autism and Parkinson’s, biodiversity has taken big hits, and the six mega-corporations who dominate the pesticide industry have gotten very rich and very powerful.
